Summer’s in full swing, temperatures in Central Texas are nice and toasty, and the evenings are long and luxurious: It’s the perfect time of year (not that there’s a bad time of year) to dive headfirst into Austin nightlife! And at least some of that nightlife, we suggest, ought to be the sort we serve up daily here at backYARD at Waller Creek.

The Austin events calendar comes far too jam-packed in summer to provide any semblance of a comprehensive overview. Instead, we’re going to give a shout-out to a few representative highlights that prove just how special (and feisty) our city is—and, of course, we’re going to do our best to lure you to our always-happening outdoor bar/restaurant and live-music venue out back of the Sheraton Austin here in the very heart of downtown.

Without further ado, let’s run through a sampler of some of the standout Austin happenings yet to come this summer!

Cool Summer Nights at the Bullock Texas State History Museum

You can do more than unpack Texas’s ridiculously rich history at the Bullock Museum this summer: You can also let your hair down, hoist a cocktail, and enjoy the cultural menu at the institution’s Cool Summer Nights series, which serves up special themed evenings once a month from June to August. July 13th is the “Art” party, which coincides with the amazing exhibition Comanche Motion: The Art of Eric Tippeconnic, while on August 10th you can give songwriting a try or strum a ukulele at the “Music” event—and, keeping with the topic, check out the museum’s exhibit on the world-famous Austin City Limits.

Austin Bat Fest

One of the most incredible summer happenings in Austin is of the natural variety: the mass evening flight of the roughly 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that roost under the South Congress Bridge. Such a mindboggling spectacle demands its own celebration, and that’s just what the Austin Bat Fest—the 14th annual edition of which takes place Saturday, August 18th at the bridge—serves as. Watch the horde of tiny bug-scarfing mammals take wing (which typically happens sometime between 7 and 8:45 PM) while enjoying live music, food, a cash bar, and the creative getups on display in the Bat Costume Contest. (Which you’re going to take part in—right?)

The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival

Hot sauce flows through the bloodstream of Austin, and you’ll have the unique, delicious, and potentially tongue-flaming opportunity to taste your way through hundreds of styles at The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival, which goes down Sunday, August 26th from 11 AM to 5 PM at Fiesta Gardens. And we realize this doesn’t exactly count as nightlife, but the point is you can steer your way directly from this saucy soiree over to backYARD at Waller Creek for an awesome and delicious evening out. Speaking of which…

Live Music & Fabulous Texan Cuisine at backYARD at Waller Creek

Here at backYARD at Waller Creek, we combine fabulous Texan fare from Chef Tad Crennen’s kitchen and all the refreshing libations you could ask for with regular performances by local bands here in the Live Music Capital of the World. So check out our events calendar and come join us for a good time here in Downtown Austin this summer!
